11-Jun-06: It's Raining Missiles

It's Raining Missiles: Sunday morning, 10am, and the missiles keep crashing down on Israel with barely a word of reportage from the mainstream media. A man is critically injured when shrapnel from a Qassam rocket fired from the Gaza Strip lands near the Sapir Academic College of the Negev, Sderot. More than 30 such missiles have landed this weekend, 9 this morning so far. The injured man is a maintenance worker at the school. He is in surgery now - the hospital says his life is in danger. Hamas takes open responsibility for the rocket attacks, declaring it will continue "until residents of Sderot evacuated the town in fear". UPDATE: Missiles fired into Israel this morning: 14.

Like many sites that advocate for a moderate, Israel-friendly viewpoint, we unfortunately receive abusive, offensive and racist messages on a routine basis. THIS ONGOING WAR is not part of the activity of the Malki Foundation (in Hebrew: Keren Malki) which was founded by us, Frimet and Arnold Roth of Jerusalem. But it is inspired by the same tragic circumstances.

Keren Malki is a memorial to the life of Malki Roth, our daughter. Malki was murdered at the age of 15 in a massacre in the centre of Jerusalem executed by terrorists - almost all of them unjustly freed in October 2011 - in the service of Hamas. Beyond its function as a remembrance of a life lost, Keren Malki daily provides tangible, concrete, invaluable support to several thousand Israeli families of every background - Christian, Moslem, Jewish, Druze and others - caring at home for a seriously disabled child.

Neurological disorders, severe illness and developmental problems in childhood change the lives of all concerned: the child, the parents, the siblings and in some ways the society around them. Such families are rarely in a position to stand up to these challenges without sustained, targeted help. In Israel, sadly, the government is more part of the problem rather than of the solution. That's where the need for Keren Malki begins.

Founded in 2001, the foundation's work is channeled into three active programs. One is focused on providing specialized equipment in the home, a second on home-based therapies and the third on families living in Israel's peripheral communities far from where most of the therapists are. In all three channels, Keren Malki aims to empower families who want to give their seriously disabled child the best possible care at home.
